'CRO COP' ON FEDOR

Mirko 'Cro Cop' Filipovic
Croatian magazine
'Sportske Novosti' recently interviewed
Mirko 'Cro Cop' Filipovic. They asked Filipovic what his thoughts were on Fedor, and Filipovic's KO of
Dos Caras Jr. Here's what Filipovic had to say:
Cro Cop on Fedor Emelianenko: "Fedor is a great man, excellent fighter. He is very fast, has great technique, and he is very strong. He has unusually phenomenal punches when the fight goes to the ground."
Cro Cop on his fight with Dos Caras Jr.: "I grazed his head with my left leg, after that he had 6 stiches. If I had kicked him instead of punching him after that KO, I would have killed him. If I knew before what was he talking about me and how arrogant he was before the fight, he would've ended up even worse"
Cro Cop on the punch to Dos Caras Jr. after the KO: "When I enter the ring, I don't ask for mercy from my opponents, and I don't have it for them. In the ring I am ready to die and kill if necessary"

FEDOR ON 'CRO COP'

Fedor Emelianenko
Few notes from the interview with Fedor in Croatian magazine
'Sportske Novosti' recently interviewed PRIDE heavyweight champion
Fedor Emelianenko. Aside from finding out that Fedor likes to spend with his family, read Tolstoj and Chechov, and enjoy his favorite dish of Borsch and Pilav, Sportke Novotski also asked him what his thoughts were on
Mirko 'Cro Cop' Filipovic, and his upcoming title defense against him. Here's what Fedor had to say:
Sportske Novosti: What do you think about Mirko?
Fedor: Mirko is a excellent fighter, he possess great knowledge of boxing and kickboxing skills. He has strong will and clear motive. All that makes him real master.
Sportske Novosti: In last two years Mirko didn't show any of his weak spots. Do you see any?
Fedor: Every fighter, even the best, has particular weakness. Mirko and I are counting on opponents weaknesses. When you see our fight, you'll see what am i talking about.
Sportske Novosti: Do you train for upcoming fight special?
Fedor: We already made strategy for the that fight. There is still over 20 days until that fight, plans can always change.

CARLSON GRACIE JOINS 'BRAZIL DOJO'

Wallid Ismael and Carlson Gracie
Gracie Magazine reports that
Carlson Gracie has joined forces with his former student
Wallid Ismael at the
'Brazil Dojo'. Below is an official release by Carlson Gracie to the media and to his former students at the
Brazilian Top Team:
October 9th 2003,
I was really surprised about what was written on the note released by the
Brazilian Top Team, specially the part about
Wallid Ismail. Wallid has always been a warrior of ethic and responsibility. The BTT leaders cannot speak about moral, ethics and honesty. All the stuff I have always done for them not even a father would do. And I have plenty of stories to support what I am saying.
One of them: When their parents divorced, I offered all four students from the
Bustamante family to keep training with me for free, and I treated
Murilo Bustamante and his brothers as my sons.
Ze Mario Sperry used to train at other academies and lost all fights in many tournaments, but I saw his potential and invited him to train with me. He replied that his family hated to listen about fighting and would not give him any money to join a Jiu-Jitsu academy. So I invited him to train for free as well.
Bebeo Duarte was another case, although I tried really hard, I could not make him become a champion. He was interested in some others stuff... But he has never paid any lessons either.
Some time later, I went to USA and opened the big events to all my students, and made them fight for valuable prizes, always with my name behind them. I even left them taking care of my academy, the
Carlson Gracie Team. But to my surprise, they started to boycott me, they did not want to give any percentage of their prizes to anyone.
That's how they came up with the
Brazilian Top Team, promising that they wouldn't charge any percentage from any fighters. But this did not happen. They betrayed me and then betrayed all their teammates. That was the time
Carlao Baretto,
Vitor Belfort,
Allan Goes,
Paulo Filho,
Ricardo Arona and others fighters left BTT. The three heads of the team,
Sperry, Bustamante and Bebeo, had betrayed everybody.
About the challenge between BTT and Brazil Dojo, I could never expect that my athletic revenge would come so quick. All I want is that they make their list of fighters, although I'd prefer that the challenge only involve the three leaders. I don't have anything against the other members of their academy, they actually were betrayed as well. I only demand that it be a 'winner takes all the money'; no money for the losers! And that the combats be held in the next
'Jungle Fight'! As everyone knows, whoever makes a challenge cannot choose where or when, fights anywhere!

COUTURE SPEAKS OUT ON REMATCH WITH ORTIZ

Randy Couture (top) beating on the hapless Tito Ortiz (bottom).
Loretta Hunt of
Full Contact Fighter recently interviewed UFC light heavyweight champion
Randy Couture. Here is an excerpt from the interview, in which Couture speaks out about a proposed rematch with
Tito Ortiz:
FCF: Once again, congratulations on another stellar outing at UFC 44. I'd like to start by asking you about an interesting comment you made at the press conference following that fight. You said that in fighting Ortiz, he made you do a lot of things you didn't want to do.
Couture: Besides the time I spent working on my bottom game, I was referring to the other area of pre-fight hype. Tito kind of brings a certain intensity and persona to the pre-fight hype and it's not my style. It's not what I like to do. It's not how I like to represent myself or the sport. And he kind of forced me to stand up and do a few things that I'm uncharacteristically not used to doing -- talking back a little bit and fortunately for me I didn't have to make up a lot of what I felt. I pretty much said what I felt about the situation and was able to do that with conviction so that made it easier for me. Generally, I would have kept those thoughts and feelings to myself and just gone out and done my job.
FCF: Jumping to the hot topic at hand, you stated at the press conference that you would gladly give Ortiz a rematch, but under a certain condition...
Couture: That's correct. I'll give him a rematch, but not until he fights Chuck Liddell.
FCF: What if Liddell does less than favorably in PRIDE?
Couture: None of that matters. If Chuck wins PRIDE, then he's going to get a rematch with me. That makes sense. He'll hold the PRIDE belt and I'm holding the UFC belt in the light-heavyweight division; we should fight again and try to kinda unify those belts. If Chuck doesn't do well in PRIDE, if he doesn't get past Quinton [Jackson] or loses to Wanderlei [Silva], then it doesn't really matter. He's still a top contender in this weight class in the UFC and he and Tito should fight. Everybody wants to see that fight and Tito needs to answer that question.

TITO'S BROKEN PROMISES

Tito Ortiz
Below are the quotes from three seperate interviews before UFC 44 of the reluctant former UFC light heavyweight champ
Tito Ortiz promising that his next opponent would be
Chuck Liddell no matter what.
Ortiz has since broken that promise by stating to Full Contact Fighter that he does
NOT want any part of a fight with
Chuck Liddell, or
Vitor Belfort for that matter, and only wants a rematch with
Randy Couture.
The quotes:
Ortiz talking to Alex Marvez: "Chuck is my next fight no matter what. He's talked so much smack. His mouth has written a check his ass can't cash and it's time for me to collect."
Ortiz talking to Arron Barringer: "In my mind, he's the next one. I mean, win, lose or draw, whatever, Chuck Liddell will be the next one."
Ortiz talking to Michael DiSanto: "And if anyone thinks I'm afraid of Chuck Liddell, Chuck Liddell is in for a whuppin'! Win, lose or draw against Randy Couture, he's the next opponent for me in my mind no matter what. I've got what I held out for."

'RAMPAGE' SPEAKS

Quinton "Rampage" Jackson
Fletcher Bailey of
MMA News recently interviewed
Quinton 'Rampage' Jackson. Here's what Rampage had to say:
MMA News: How's training going for the November fight at the PRIDE Grand Prix?
Quinton Jackson: Training is going great. I feel great and I cant wait for the fights. Training is just going great.
MMA News: You and Chuck Liddell seem to be getting along during all the PR stuff for DirecTV, UFC 44, etc. With that said, are you still ready to dump him on his head in November?
Quinton Jackson: Yeah, Chuck is a neat guy. We talk a lot and he is cool.
MMA News: What are your thoughts on Chuck Liddell as a fighter?
Quinton Jackson: He's a cool guy, but he has some shit he needs to work on.
MMA News: Speaking of UFC 44, what did you think of the show? What was your favorite fight and what impressed you the most?
Quinton Jackson: I really didn't have a favorite fight and no fighter really impressed me.
MMA News: What would you think about a fight against Randy Couture? PRIDE and UFC are sending fighters both ways, would you be willing to represent PRIDE and take out Randy?
Quinton Jackson: If the money is right then I will fight him. I mean if the money was right I would run down the street butt naked.
MMA News: I'll ask you the same thing I asked Chuck [Liddell]...do you personally feel the deck is stacked against you the way the next round of the tourney is set up? To win you need to get past both Chuck and Vanderlei [Silva] in the same night, while Vanderlei should have his way with [Hidehiko] Yoshida, and left fighting more fresh in the finals.
Quinton Jackson: I think they did set up this tournament for Silva to win, but who cares. I have never had anything easy in my life. I have always had to work for everything I have now and trust me im working hard enough to beat Chuck and Silva.
MMA News: Vanderlei's belt isn't up for grabs in this tourney, but you might still get a victory over him while he's champion. Does that, in your view, guarantee you a title shot after the tournament?
Quinton Jackson: Well actually I am the number one contender. So even if I don't win the tournament, I will be facing Silva next probably.
MMA News: How do you feel about having to beat Vanderlei twice to become the champion, and hold the belt?
Quinton Jackson: I think it's stupid.
MMA News: After the Grand Prix is over, and after your fight with Silva, who would you want to fight? The elite Middleweights were put in this tournament, so who that wasn't involved would you like to fight after?
Quinton Jackson: You know, I really don't care. Fighting to me is a job, and I will fight anybody I have to so I can make some money for me to live. So, just bring anybody in front of me, and I will fight them.
MMA News: Alright thanks Rampage. Nice talking to you as always, good luck in November.
Quinton Jackson: Thanks. Right back at you.

ATKINS INSIDER: ZUFFA'S NEW PROBLEMS
By Todd Atkins

Tito Ortiz (far left) crying after losing Randy Couture (far right).
Zuffa has some very
BIG issues right now. First off they will have to strip
Tim Sylvia. This is not what they wanted to do right now. This is a big blow and big concern for them. Sylvia will be out 6 months. The heavyweight division is really up in the air right now.
Frank Mir may fight
Andre Arlovski, but I think now is the time UFC may lean on Pride to supply one of there heavyweights. Don't count out
Ricco Rodriguez either. Zuffa wanted Mir to win but it creates a problem with the Sylvia issue. So unless Pride sends a top heavyweight, I think we see
Mir vs. Arlovski, which has very little selling power. Or Mir vs. Ricco, which would then leave
Pedro Rizzo without an opponent (maybe
Kazuyuki Fujita?). Lots to sort out there.(I bet Frank Mir wouldn't pass a test today-- he has put a lot of weight on in the last few months)
Also I believe
Tito Ortiz has an automatic rematch clause in his contract. I don't think he has to win another fight before the rematch either. That complicates the light heavyweight division. Zuffa would like to have
Couture vs. Belfort for the title in January or February. Conventional wisdom would have Tito face
Chuck Liddell for #1 contender, but that won't happen. I predict that UFC will pay Tito MORE money to give up his right to an automatic rematch and he will fight someone that won't be much of a threat --possibly someone like Babalu. Then he will get the rematch after Couture vs. Belfort. Bottom line is, he isn't going to fight Chuck anytime soon.
Frank Trigg is signed to fight
Matt Hughes, but I don't think Hughes has actually signed the bout agreement yet. Not sure why Zuffa didn't take advantage of Trigg's mouth and hype the Hughes/Trigg matchup on the PPV. Trigg was at the show and the show had no time issues. If Trigg loses he gets another fight guaranteed within 8 months. He also is the only fighter besides Tito Ortiz that is allowed to sell his own shirts/hats at the show. Dana thinks Hughes will steamroll Trigg so that's why he gave in a bit on the money and a 2-fight deal. Both sides seem real happy with it. I wonder why Dana isn't saying anything about Trigg being all talk now? Too bad
Sean Sherk didn't have a deal like this, he could beat a lot of guys UFC currently had at 170.
I am also hearing that if Hughes wins,
Matt Lindland may be interested in dropping to 170 to fight him, it wasn't that long ago that Lindland wrestled at 167.5.

SYLVIA TEST SHOWS STEROID KNOWN AS 'WINSTROL'

According to test result documents by the
Nevada State Athletic Commission, the anabolic steroid that was detected in the system of UFC heavyweight champion
Tim Sylvia was
Stanozolol Metabolite, or more commonly known by the brand name of
'Winstrol'.
For those who are not familiar with
Winstrol, its main use by athletes is as a dietary steroid, as it helps you keep lean muscle while dieting. It is not very useful at all for gaining muscle.
The
NSAC is now seeking to fine and suspend Sylvia in a hearing that has been scheduled for for
October 15.

NSAC FILES OFFICIAL COMPLAINT AGAINST SYLVIA

Tim Sylvia (top)
On October 7, 2003, Executive Director of the Nevada State Athletic Commission
Marc Ratner filed a
'complaint for disciplinary action and notice of hearing' against UFC Heavyweight champion
Tim Sylvia.
The complaint alleges Sylvia violated
Nevada Administrative Code 467.850, including (1) "the administration of or use of any alcohol, stimulant or drug, or injection that has not been approved by the commission." As a licensed Nevada professional mixed martial artist, Sylvia is subject to the provisions of Chapter 467 of the Nevada Revised Statutes and of Chapter 467 of the Nevada Administrative Code.
Sylvia voluntarily submitted to a urinalysis immediately following his first title defense against
Gan McGee at
UFC 44: Undisputed in Las Vegas on Friday, September 26th. An analysis of the sample was conducted by Las Vegas based Quest Diagnostics and the results were concluded just 4 days later. The toxicology report was received by the NSAC on Oct. 2. "The urinalysis reflected the presence of Stanozolol Metabolite, which is an anabolic agent," stated Ratner.
The complaint was sent by certified mail to Sylvia and his manager Monte Cox. Zuffa LLC was immediately notified by the NSAC. A hearing is scheduled for
October 15, and is expected to include Marc Ratner, Tim Sylvia, Monte Cox and Dana White.
Under the NRS and NAC, the commission may suspend or revoke the license of Sylvia, as well as impose a penalty of up to 100% of his $60,000 purse. Sylvia may also be required to pay the costs of the proceeding, including investigative costs and attorney's fees. In the complaint, Ratner is seeking full reimbursement.

We also fully support the NSAC in whatever its judgment might be."

TITO PLANS ON DUCKING LIDDELL AND BELFORT
By Eddie Goldstein

Tito Ortiz
In yet another show of true fear, former reluctant UFC light heavyweight champ and clown prince of MMA
Tito Ortiz has just stated in an interview with
Full Contact Fighter that he does
NOT want any part of a fight with both
Chuck Liddell and
Vitor Belfort. This is contrary to what Ortiz has said before his loss to
Randy Couture at UFC 44, when Ortiz had said he would fight Chuck Liddell next, whether he won or lost to Couture.
Ortiz then went on to give a multitude of excuses for why he lost his title to
Randy Couture, such as injuries and a heavy P.R. schedule. Yet before the loss to Couture, Tito had said the opposite, having said how he was completely healthy and had gotten to train three months up at Big Bear. Ortiz said he only wants a rematch with
Randy Couture, although UFC president
Dana White has stated that Couture will most likely defend his belt against Vitor Belfort, and that Ortiz will most likely have to fight Chuck Liddell (the man he has ducked for two years now).
In fact, according to some very reliable insiders, one of the main reasons Ortiz cried like a baby after losing to Couture was because his true plans got crushed. According to these insiders, if Ortiz had won, he planned to upstage the
UFC once again by holding out fighting against Liddell for a second time, instead preferring a much safer rematch against the 40-year old past-his-prime
Ken Shamrock.
Will Dana White and Zuffa ownership cave in to their spoiled and overrated poster boy Ortiz once again, or will they stand firm this time? Stay tuned for more news to come on this in the coming week.

TIM SYLVIA STEROID SCANDAL

Tim Sylvia (left)
The following is an official press release from
Team Extreme and
Miletich Fighting Systems regarding the use of banned substances (steroids) by UFC heavyweight champ
Tim Sylvia right before
UFC 44:
UFC heavyweight champion
Tim Sylvia announced today that he had taken a
banned substance prior to his title defense against Gan McGee on Sept. 26 in Las Vegas.
"I made a terrible mistake... the biggest mistake of my life," Sylvia said. "I wish I could take it back, but that isn't possible. So, I'm ready to accept the consequences for my actions."
The
Nevada State Athletic Commission notified Sylvia of the infraction earlier this week. Sylvia hopes to have a hearing in front of the board on
Oct. 15 in Las Vegas.
"After I won the title, I wanted to look better... to have a better physique," Sylvia said. "I have never taken
steroids before, so I tried it for a month after the Ricco fight. Now, it's obvious that it was a big mistake."
Sylvia said he will abide by whatever decisions are made by the NSAC and Zuffa.
"I just want to apologize for letting people down... my fans, my teammates, my family, the Nevada State Athletic Commission and the UFC," Sylvia said. "I can't express how disappointed I am in myself right now. I've gotten such great support from so many people... I hope they will stick by me and help me get through this. I want to accept responsibility for what I did, do whatever I have to do to put it behind me, and move on with my career."

B-CLASS FIGHT MANAGER CALLS KETTLE BLACK
B-class fighter manager,
Zachary Brennan (brother of
Chris Brennan), recently had this to say about respected Fightsport corrispondant,
Todd Atkins, at the Pride Bushido show...
"As for
Todd Atkins probably didnt get to really enjoy the show. We ran into Enson and ended up sitting with Enson, Kid and Ryan Bow. Not thinking about who else would be sitting with them. We were having a great time. After about 10-15 minutes this short white dude sitting directly in front of me gets up and starts to leave, Enson yells, "hey Todd, where ya goin?" Todd, "I'll be right back"
Me and my quick goat thinking, I realized it was Atkins, LOL. He came back sat down and never once turned around or even faced Chris or I and we sat there for the whole night, talking with Ryan who sat right next to him for fights 4-11.
He appeared to be so umconfortable nothing we could have done or said would have been better. The funny thing is, we didnt really care that it was him and should he have said hi we would have been cool. I mean what are we gonna cause a commotion in the seats at Pride? I think he was just a bit stressed out having us sit directly behind him being all chummy with his "crew", Chris, Egan and Enson go way back, most people just dont know that. Todd should have simply said hi. But this is what happens when "keyboard warriors" come face to face with "real warriors".
And I just want to say, Kid and Ryan are two very very nice individuals and it was a pleasure meeting them, I am a huge fan of both as fighters and now I can say I am a fan of each as a person, they were total class and respect and just all around cool people. And Enson just rocks!"

Chris Brennan (bottom)

Todd Atkins
Now, the irony behind this story is that many may remember the incident where
Robin Gracie beat up
Damien Riccio in a bar over in France, after Riccio challenged Robin at a seminar.
Zachary Brennan (aka Johnny Ringo) was one of the most active participants in bashing the Gracies, online no-less. It's funny that he talks about Atkins when he had a chance to talk smack to
Royce Gracie at Bushido....yet he waits until he gets home in the USA to talk smack about
Atkins, in true keyboard-warrior fashion.
A classic case of the pot calling the kettle black.

PRIDE BUSHIDO AND PANCRASE ATTENDANCE FIGURES

Carlos Newtin (top) vs. Renzo Gracie (bottom) at PRIDE Bushido.
Zach Arnold of
Puroresu Power reported the following attendance figures for the
Pancrase and
PRIDE Bushido events last weekend:
PANCRASE 2003 HYBRID TOUR
Saturday, October 4th, 2003
Grand Cube Osaka
Osaka, Japan
Attendance: claiming 1,600 paid.
PRIDE Bushido
Sunday, October 5th, 2003
Saitama Super Arena
Saitama, Japan
Attendance: Estimates for the crowd were 12,400 paid. (around 40% capacity)
Editor's note: Not a great number for PRIDE Bushido, yet it is still as good (or better) then the estimated paid attendance for
UFC 44. It's a good measure to see just how wide the gap currently is between the US and Japan when it comes to live attendance and mainstream acceptance of MMA.
With the right marketing approach, most experts feel that the US can close (and eventually surpass) that gap in the coming years, which is why PRIDE and K-1 would like to break into the lucrative US market.

ANOTHER INTERNET WARRIOR EXPOSED: QUINCY RICE

Internet fighter Quincy "Spice" Rice
Fightsport.com exposed yet another internet warrior known as
Quincy Rice. Rice, who has been labeled by many in the MMA community as an
'internet fighter', posed a challenge to
Fightsport.com to send one of its reporters to his school in Michigan for a challenge spar of any choosing.
Fightsport.com responded to the challenge and then some. Our beat reporter called
'BIRD' offered to go up there and not only have a boxing sparring match with Rice, but also that he would spar Rice's best student right after!
When Rice read our reply posted at the Underground forum,
Rice refused to accept the challenge and the message was quickly deleted by moderators. Lucky for the internet fighter Quincy Rice as BIRD is a very accomplished amateur boxer.
Quincy Rice is also called
Quincy 'Spice' by many people in the internet community who are wise to his ways. According to one respected grappling event organizer:
"Rice has actually even competed in some events. He talks a big game but always ends up losing to the legit grapplers. Rice has even lost a spate of grappling matches to Brazilian jiu-jitsu blue belts (laughing). That's the reason why a lot of grapplers and promoters refer to him in private as the
'Grappling Circuit Jobber' (more laughter)."

SHAMROCK VS. GRACIE IS OFF

The following was reported on the
Gracie Fighter website:
"
Frank Shamrock's fight with
Cesar Gracie, slated for the
14th of November in
'Shootbox', has fallen through and will not be happening. After stating to anyone who would listen that his fight with Cesar was a
'done deal', it was learned that a date was never even secured with the New Orleans Hotel (the venue where the fight was reportedly to occur). Cesar had agreed to the fight and it seemed as everything was in motion for the bout. However when a contract was never delivered to Cesar, it became apparent that something was wrong.
Shootbox, which is partly owned by Frank, never bothered to inform Cesar or his management that the fight was off. It seems as if the whole episode was a publicity stunt on the part of Frank! We will have an interview with Cesar and get his take on all of this in the next couple of days."
Editor's note: The November Shootbox event has actually been postponed according to Shoot Box P.R. people. Some problems arose in terms of logistics and finance. Early 2004 is the new date for the planned Vegas Shootbox show to take place.
