CRISTIANO MARCELLO SPEAKS

Cristiano Marcello
Brazilian magazine
'Tatame' recently interviewed Chute Boxe's head BJJ instructor
Cristiano Marcello. Here's what Cristiano Marcello had to say (interview by
Marcelo Alonso):
Tatame: What is the daily training you prepare for Chute Boxe?
Cristiano Marcelo: They start wearing the gi, training at least 50 minutes. I look to teach everyone, and try to correct their deficiencies. If there's a guy not good enough on on the bottom game, I put him on the bottom to learn how to do the guard. If the fighter has never trained BJJ, just Muay Thai, I start teaching the defenses.
Tatame: Ninja won by submission in the last PRIDE...It seems that BJJ is another option for the strikers from Curitiba, Brazil...
Cristiano Marcelo: Chute Boxe doesn;t need just have Muay Thai to decide a fight now. From now on, it'll always like that: if the fight can;t be won on the feet, then take it to the ground and look to finish. Ninja is a very technical fighter, and he has all the skills to take the fight to the ground, as he did against (Alexander) Otsuka.
Tatame: Besides Ninja, who are the most technical fighters on the team?
Cristiano Marcelo: Shogun is exceptional. I started teaching him as a blue belt. Now he's a brown belt, and if you put him in the BJJ championships, he'll submit everybody. He's a very talented guy and has great stamina. I'm just teaching them what I learned. There's also Vanderlei Silva, who recieved his black belt, MaurĂcio Veio, Michael and Jadyson Costa. The guys are very professional.
Tatame: Would they be able to compete in a BJJ tournament?
Cristiano Marcelo: Of course, and they'd be able to make things difficult for anyone. They have trained BJJ before, but the guy who taught them didn't show them all the techniques. He was afraid the guys could defeat a BJJ athlete one day... But I always had an open mind and I knew the sport will become professional.
Tatame: How was your first training sessions at Chute Boxe?
Cristiano Marcelo: It was tough. My shin looked like a big ball full of blood. But that's how it goes, 'no pain, no gain'.
Tatame: Who gave you your black belt, Royler or Rickson Gracie?
Cristiano Marcelo: Rickson gave me my brown belt, and Royler gave me the black one. I lived almost three years with Rickson. He would teach Rockson, who was my best friend, and I learned along with him. But I learned much more as a man than as a fighter. Rickson is a very evolved person, much more then everyone else.
Tatame: Did anyone complain with you about Vanderlei recieving a black belt?
Cristiano Marcelo: No, but aside from that, they have to understand that Vanderlei will always carry the flag for jiu-jitsu. In reality, he's demonstrated a better ground game than many people. Not only him, but all of the athletes at Chute Boxe. Actually, I think Minotauro is the only guy to demonstrate mainly jiu-jitsu. The jiu-jitsu guys should look the Chute Boxe fighters in another way, without indifference. They are all jiu-jitsu athletes and are representing the art.

GAMBLING JOURNALIST JAKE ROSSEN REFUSES TO PAY DEBT

Jake Rossen
The downfall of former comic book reviewer, MMA internet journalist, and known gambler
Jake Rossen has been dramatic, but a recent gambling debt has seemed to bring Rossen down to new levels.
Late last year Rossen offered a
USD$3,000 wager to MMA insider
Shiloh McIver, in which Rossen stated that he would give McIver the money if
Tito Ortiz signed to fight
Chuck Liddell before the end of
2004.
McIver
agreed to the wager. Both the offer by Rossen, and the acceptance of the wager by McIver, were both posted here on the
Fightsport.com newspage and can be found in our
archives.
Ortiz has now officially signed to fight Liddell, and the fight will take place on
April 2nd,
2004. This makes McIver the winner of the bet, as Ortiz has signed to fight Liddell before the end of 2004.
Rossen has
refused to pay McIver, and refuses to accept that he made the wager. As many fans will recall, Rossen already lost
USD$1,000 a few months back in another careless internet wager.
Fightsport.com has the actual
e-mail that Rossen sent to us to post on our newssite. In it, he makes the wager offer for
USD$3,000. We will be taking a screenshot of this e-mail and posting it right here on the newssite within the next day.
Stay tuned for this ongoing saga, and let's hope
Jake Rossen can finally try to take care of his obvious gambling problem.

LEE MURRAY TELLS ALL REGARDING STREETFIGHT WITH TITO ORTIZ IN LONDON

Lee Murray
The following quotes are from an interview with
Lee Murray by Ryan Bennett:
Lee Murray on his streetfight with Tito Ortiz at the UFC 38 aftershow party in London, England: "(Laughs). He's not even a man. He can't even admit to what happened. He has to come up with all this bullshit lies, saying, I had slippery shoes on. Hey, next time he comes to fight me, make sure he doesn't wear dress shoes. He ain't even man enough to say what happened. He said he got jumped by five guys or ten guys. The guy comes running at me, the guy come at me. Must have thought I was an idiot and come running at me throwing punches and thought I wasn't going to do nothing about it. What did he think, I was gonna run away? On the street, I got two, three, four hundred street fights, I've been street fighting all my life and this guy's got ten or twenty fights in the octagon and thinks he's gonna scare me off."
Lee Murray explains the sequence of events leading up to the altercation with Tito Ortiz: "I was speaking to him at fight, in the club, we was chattin. Pat and a few other guys were talking. We went outside and there was some commotion. I couldn't really see what was going on. Me and my friend were trying to break it with Pat and a few others and it kicked off. One guy tried to hit my friend and I jumped in and that's when Tito jumped in on me. I think the guy I stepped in on was one of his friends. Then he is coming to me. Pat and three other guys stepped between us. Then, his friend got knocked out cold. I was laughing, he seen me and took his jacket off. I took my jacket off, my watch off and put it in my pocket. He come running at me throwing punches and I smacked him up."
Lee Murray comments on Tito's excuse that he was drunk during their street fight: "We was both drinking. Tito was drunk, what about me? I was drinking vodkas and champagne all night. I was drunk as well. What does he think, I was sober and just finished a couple of rounds of shadow boxing and was ready? I was drinking all night and had dress shoes on as well. Dress shoes, what kind of excuse is that? If he was half a man, he'd come up with a better excuse than that. If that was me, you know what I'd have said? I'd have said, ah yeah, I was drunk, I scraped with a fighter and got a whaping. I wouldn't say I had dress shoes on and got rushed by ten guys."

Witnesses have come out to say that they saw
Tito Ortiz actually run and hide when he saw

back door, before finally finding a way out.
Below is an eye witness account:
"a phone call i recieved this morning ahs got me wondering. why did tito run and hide at the aftershow party, my friend was wondering, then when he turned to see The battling Brit 1/0 in the ufc Lee Murray and his woolich massive crip walking into the club. i here tito tried to leave through the back door, and ran away with his huge noggin bobbing."
-Ross from the UKAs most fans already know, Tito Ortiz has already had an altercation with Lee Murray back at the
UFC London aftershow party last year, when Ortiz was supposedly knocked to the ground by a combination of Murray strikes.

MURRAY VS. RIVERA ARTICLE

Lee Murray
The Milford Daily News featured the following piece regarding the
Lee Murray vs. Jorge Rivera fight in
UFC 46:
DOWN BUT NOT OUT
By Christopher J. Marshall / News Staff Writer
Monday, February 2, 2004
LAS VEGAS -- It was the night's fastest fight, and it left a stunned Jorge Rivera in disbelief.
London's "Lightning" Lee Murray made quick work of the Milford resident in Saturday night's opening main card match of the Ultimate Fighting Championship 46, beating Rivera by submission less than two minutes into the fight.
In the first minute Rivera pushed the heavy-handed Murray against the fence, and quickly took him down on the mat forcing the fight to the ground. Murray, lying on his back, caught Rivera in a triangle choke hold involving the legs.
As Rivera attempted to escape Murray caught a hold of his arm and would never let go. With both fighters having barely broken a sweat Rivera struggled to break loose. Murray cranked up the pressure leaving Rivera two choices; suffer a hyper-extended elbow or tap out.
At one minute and 45 seconds into the first round, Rivera tapped out to Murray's armbar, suffering the second loss of his career and his first by submission.
Shocked at the outcome, Rivera immediately walked to the side of the Octagon, threw his hands on top of the cage and put his head down in disbelief.
A sizeable British crowd waving United Kingdom flags and wearing Lee Murray T-shirts erupted for the victorious Murray. Following announcer Bruce Buffer's reading of the results, Rivera congratulated Murray on the victory and left for the lockers.
"I got caught," Rivera said after, noting he did not respect Murray's ground fighting abilities. "He got me in a triangle and I left my arm unprotected. It's part of the game, but I'll be back."
The fight, expected to be an all out war with two renown knockout artists trading blows, was anything but as only a handful of punches were thrown during the match.
"That just shows how unpredictable this sport is," said UFC matchmaker Joe Silva. "Anything can happen with this sport."
As for Rivera's future in the UFC, Silva, noting he is a tough fighter, said, "We'll have to see. I'll definitely try to make a space to bring him back."
The bout took place before a sellout crowd of 11,400 at the Mandalay Bay Events Center. Fans included St. Louis Rams running back Marshall Faulk, Chicago White Sox first baseman Frank Thomas, New York Yankee Jason Giambi, and actors Michael Clark Duncan, Jason Statham and Forrest Whitaker.
The night proved to be one of the more unpredictable UFC events, as the main event fight of Oregon's Randy Couture vs. Brazil's Vitor Belfort lasted less than a minute. Referee "Big" John McCarthy stopped the fight 40 seconds into the bout as Couture suffered a gash in a lower eye lid after Belfort inadvertently clipped it with his hand.
Heavily favored and six-time defending welterweight champ Matt Hughes was also defeated in the first round by Hawaii's B.J. Penn after submitting from a choke hold.
At the post-fight press conference several fighters, Silva, and UFC President Dana White spoke about the wild night.
Speaking of Murray, White said, "He came in against a tough, tough guy in Jorge Rivera. The last thing anybody expected was Lee Murray by submission."
Murray, talking in a thick British accent, said he wanted a different result as well.
"I was hoping for the knockout, but the victory is the most important," he said. Pointing out the UFC has been his goal since he started training five years ago, Murray said his next step is for the title.
"Anyone that steps in my way is going to get knocked out," he said.
As for Rivera, he said he wanted to thank everybody who came out to support him, including all his sponsors and those back in Milford.
"I'm sorry I let them down, but I'll be back," he said.

COUTURE TO MAKE FULL RECOVERY

Randy Couture
Former UFC light heavyweight champion
Randy Couture announced to the media that he is recovering fine from eye surgery performed yesterday in Las Vegas. He is expected to make a
full recovery, and will be able to resume training in about
two weeks.
Couture says his eye injury last night at
UFC 46 was caused by a seam on the outside of the commission issued gloves that grazed his left eye. The injury required
three stitches to his lower eyelid, and
five to his upper lid. There was also some retinal abrasion, as well as some irregularity with his pupil dilation that he was given eye drops for.
According to Couture, Zuffa has already started discussing a possible rematch with newly crowned light heavyweight champion
Vitor Belfort. Couture stated that he can be ready to fight again as early as
April, although the month of
June is more probable.

JOE ROGAN DENIES STREET FIGHT IN VEGAS
By Scoop McTroll
Joe Rogan (right) looking the worse for wear at UFC 46UFC commentator and
Fear Factor host
Joe Rogan has lashed out at rumors suggesting he was involved in an altercation with former
Pride commentator
Stephen Quadros in Las Vegas last week.
Rogan, who appeared on the
UFC46 broadcast sporting two black eyes, has claimed that the damage was caused by two seperate BJJ training incidents earlier in the week. "
Fear Factor had a shit fit, they had to call in a professional make up artist to try to cover it, but the
UFC thought it was cool" said a beaten and battered looking
Rogan.According to a
UFC employee, the rumor that
Rogan was jumped by
Stephen Quadros in a bathroom at a Vegas strip club has absolutely no substance. "I dont know where people come up with this stuff" they said.
At this point in time we have not been able to contact
