'SHOGUN' SPEAKS

Mauricio "Shogun" Rua (left)

Brazilian magazine 'Tatame' recently interviewed Mauricio 'Shogun' Rua. Here's what Shogun had to say:

Tatame: How was your second fight in PRIDE?

Shogun: I began with a very good rhythm, and I went after Gono with full force. I kept up that pace until the end, when I scored the knockout.

Tatame: Gono had been talking that after his draw with Ninja and after beating Nilson Castro twice, that he could face anyone from Chute Boxe...

Shogun: He is too cocky, and that made me very angry. I went into that fight determined to avenge my friend Nilson, and to bring back order to the house.

Tatame: Vanderlei has said you would be a great heavyweight. He said that you are tough and agile, and that those are rare qualities for a heavyweight. Rudimar also confessed he has been working with you to gain weight. How do you see this?

Shogun: I was weighing 98 kg (216 pounds), and I had to drop to 93kg (205 pounds) to fight in PRIDE. I think that I will be fighting in the heavyweight division in one or two years, but not right now. I'm gaining weight little by little, as I believe that this will help me keep my agility as I gain wieght.

Tatame: Who is the best heavyweight in your opinion? Who would you like to face?

Shogun: Minotauro is one of the best. The heavyweight division has such great fighters, it will be difficult, but I do not pick my opponents. I will fight whoever I have to fight.

Tatame: How have the Japanese fans taken to you?

Shogun: They adore us, and I am starting to become recognized. Many of the fans wait in the halls of our hotel so that they can get photos and autographs.

Tatame: What did you think of the fights of Jadyson and Vanderlei?

Shogun: Vanderlei was his usual self, noone was surprised by his victory. About Jadyson, I think the pressure of making his international debut in such a big show weighed on him. I don't know what happened to him, he's very good on the ground but he didn't do anything when the fight went to the ground.

GODOI JJ UNITES WITH BRAZILIAN TOP TEAM

Brazilian magazine 'Tatame' reports that Godoi Jiu-Jitsu has merged with the Brazilian Top Team.

Godoi Jiu-Jitsu is run by BJJ blackbelt Roberto Godoi, and based out of Sao Paulo, Brazil. Jorge 'Macaco' Patino was formerly associated with Godoi before moving on to the Chute Boxe team.

Godoi says, "I've always had a good impression of Murilo Bustamante, even before he formed BTT. When I split with Jorge Macaco, we started to have some training exchanges with BTT. We started talking from there, but nothing was formulated until now."

The move will give BTT a presence in Sao Paulo, while giving Godoi's fighters world class MMA training when in Rio de Janeiro, where BTT is located. Godoi's fighters will compete in MMA under the BTT name. Godoi and his top black belts will compete in Jiu-Jitsu and submission competitions under the BTT name as well, while the Godoi JJ team will serve as the B-team.

Edcarlos "Monstro" (right)

Brazilian magazine 'Tatame' reports that Edcarlos 'Monstro' recently returned to the Chute Boxe team.

'Monstro' was one of the defections that hit Chute Boxe at the end of last year, when Assuerio Silva and Anderson Silva left the team.

"In reality, there was nothing wrong between us, and that is why we are welcoming his return", confirmed Chute Boxe manager Rudimar Fedrigo.

The 110 kg (242 pounds) 'Monstro' (whose nickname means 'Monster' in Portuguese) was the Storm Muay Thai GP champ, and figures to be Chute Boxe's resident heavyweight fighter.

Chute Boxe manager/trainer Rudimar Fedrigo contacted Tatame to set the record straight that it was just a malicious rumor, and that Vanderlei was not leaving Chute Boxe. Rudimar added, "That was an irresponsible rumor which does not deserve to even be commented on".

Vanderlei Silva added, "That rumor was totally unfounded. Master Rudimar means everything to me when I am in the middle of a fight. The gratitude I have for him I think is much more then he has for me. The thought of leaving never passed through my head, and never will."

INSIDE SCOOP: LEE MURRAY CAUSES RIOT

By Scoop McTroll

Lee Murray

Before reading any further, please read our disclaimer first.

I just got back from the recent UKMMAC last night in London, England, in which I witnessed (and was in the middle of) a riot at the show.

What seemed to be the cause of the riot was when Lee Murray apparently had a problem with some of the bouncers. Murray then went on to rip his shirt off and run through the crowd, proceeding to show his patented 'Lightning' fast punches, destroying the doorstaff and a few Brazilians who stood in his way.

The crowd were obviously excited to see their UFC hero in action, and all tried to get a closer look. This seemed to cause havok in the venue and the riot ensued, lasting for a good 30 minutes.

POSTAL CONNECTIONS: PENN'S FUTURE

By Tape Lord

B.J. Penn

Hello my friends, our Zuffa informant 'Coffee Guy' tells me that the real reason B.J. Penn has been talking about fighting only once a year is because he is using it as leverage to get the kind of money and fights he feels he should get from the UFC.

Penn's current UFC deal sees him making approximately USD$15,000 to show and USD$15,000 to win. Penn supposedly feels that such a pay is too low for him to be dedicating the entire year training for about 3 or 4 fights.

Sources close to the situation say Penn can easily make the same, or more money a year doing the family real estate business, while fighting whenever he feels a good fight comes up, and continuing to promote his 'Rumble On The Rock' show. For him to put those things on hold, he feels he would need to get paid at least USD$50-75,000 to show and USD$50-75,000 to win.

Sources close to Penn and sources in Japan have also mentioned that DSE/PRIDE is very interested in signing Penn for their PRIDE Bushido promotion, and will be contacting him soon, if they haven't already.

LIDDELL: 'TITO'S AFRAID OF MY HANDS'

Chuck Liddell

Chuck Liddell was gone on record as saying that when him and Tito Ortiz used to train together, that he used to get the better of Ortiz in both striking and wrestling.

Liddell was on MMA Weekly radio and expanded on that saying that training is just training, but that this fight has been a long time coming, and that he feels he's a better wrestler then Ortiz, who always had a tough time taking Liddell down in past training.

Liddell went on to say that he has a psychological advantage over Ortiz, saying:

'He's afraid of my hands, and knows how hard I hit before we go out there. I plan on taking the fight to Tito and making him work, especially on the feet. He's gonna have a real tough time with me.

When asked about his losses to Randy Couture and Quinton Jackson, Liddell re-iterated the same excuse that he 'just wasn't there' mentally, but that he thinks he's got it going now.

TYSON AVOIDS JAIL

Mike Tyson

Mike Tyson has avoided jail by pleading guilty to disorderly conduct after a brawl outside a Brooklyn hotel. Tyson was initially charged with assault, harassment and disorderly conduct and faced up to a year in jail.

Tyson agreed to 100 hours of community service. Once he serves that lecturing, training and instructing at Gleeson's boxing gym in Brooklyn he will be cleared of the graver charges.

The incident stems from June of last year, when Tyson was arrested and charged with the assault of Samuel Velez and Nestor Alvarez at the Marriott Hotel after the pair approached him for an autograph. Velez and Alvarez are charged with menacing and harassing and are expected to face trial later this year.
