SUPERBRAWL 36 RESULTS
Yushin Okami and Niko Vitale prior to the fightFrom Promoter.
Wow. What a night of close fights... the tourney opened with three first-round fights going the distance... and two of the winners being unable to continue.
Ryan Schultz won a split decision over Mike Aina in a war.
Justin James defeats Deshaun Johnson by unanimous decision... but James suffered a fractured orbital. Johnson replaced him in the semis.
Kola Koka defeats Bart Palaszewski unanimous decision... but Koka injured a knee... and Bart could not continue... Aina stepped in to the semis.
Roger Huerta defeats Sarmiento by TKO... ref stop due to strikes in the third round.
SEMIFINALS
Schultz defeats Johnson by rear naked choke with 5 seconds left in round 1.
Huerta defeats Aina by unanimous decision... this was another all-out war... lots of striking on the feet and ground.
FINALS
Schultz defeats Huerta...Schultz's knee dislocates Huerta's jaw. The first minute or so was a slugfest with Huerta doing very well... then the knee turned the tide.
Congrats to Schultz... the Super Brawl/Extreme Challenge tourney champion!!!
Niko Vitale defeats Okami...a very, very close split decision win for Vitale.
Only decisive round was the third, which Niko dominated with a flying knee and many kicks to the body... Okami played defense the whole round.
The first round was a pick 'em... and I thought Okami probably deserved the edge due to a takedown and a couple hard punches landed from on top.
The second round was void of action... Niko got the first takedown, and landed some hard body shots. Late in the round, Okami got a takedown and landed a few blows before the horn sounded. Could have gone either way, could have been a draw...
In the end, Niko got the nod. Okami did not argue in the least. Niko said he had hoped to do better. The fight had a lot of clinching with both guys trying not to get taken down.
GREAT FIGHTS... thanks to all who fought their hearts out.

'THE CANDYMAN' SPEAKS

Dhira "The Candyman" Dhira
BY LUKE BESTONLB: Hi Dhira, thanks for agreeing to this interview. Can you start by telling my readers about your history in the martial arts. How you got started, what you have trained in, and what you still train in today.
KWJ: Thank you my friend, it is an honor to be interviewed by a close friend and respected journalist such as yourself. My martial journey began like most kids, through Bruce Lee movies; difference being I wanted to do exactly what he did, so in a nutshell, I began in Wing Chun Kung Fu, became interested in Jeet Kune Do, moved onto Kenpo Karate which I received my black belt in, cotinued in Wing Chun and then began Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. BJJ led me to study some wrestling & some Judo for takedowns, and MMA led me to focus on boxing and kickboxing which I loved because in Kenpo we sparred a LOT; basically kickboxed, but adding Muay Thai made it more hard core & more fun.
LB: Why did you train Judo?
KWJ: hahahaha. Well I noticed that in BJJ competitions, wrestlers & Judoka would often stall on their feet & try to score on takedowns only; winning the match, but not the war, so i uh....hahaha.........had to go "incognito" to study their game in order to either add to my arsenal, or figure out the best BJJ counters for such stallers.
LB: Have you ever had to use your martial arts skills in a real life streetfight?
KWJ: Numerous times. It is an unfortunate circumstance that my celebrity and unassuming demeanor seem to cause an avalanche of confusion and jealousy to be directed my way. But being the well-opiled machine that I am, those conflicts only ever go one way; mine.
LB: Do you honestly believe that striking works in a real fight?
KWJ: haha. Well my friend, sometiems we have no choice as to what we use in a fight. But I can assure you that the most decisive and humiliating way to defeat an opponet is without throwing a single strike. Something I have done many many a time. The satisfaction of being behind someone, pretending to hump them while they can't move as you whisper in their ear "who's your daddy now, bitch?" while slowly putting them to sleep...its.....unparralled in striking.
LB: Do you believe that that running around in hot pants and leather gloves should be saved for pride parades and that MMA matches should be conducted barenuckle and in a kimono?
KWJ: You know, there is a contradiction in the world of MMA/NHB. The glory days involved bare knuckle matches with optional Kimonos. I would like to see these brought back as options. In a "real" fight, most people are clothed.....except if you happen to be picking a 'fight' in some unscrupulous district in San Francisco. Heh heh. Thats why I had some open hand fights. no gloves required. have you ever felt the satisfaction of slapping a man in the face? It is enlightening. lol
LB: You recently had your second MMA fight in Mexico. Now having fought How does it feel to have earned the label "Undefeated International Pro MMA fighter"?
KWJ: I actually had a couple prior to the ones that most people know about. But it is heartwarming to feel like one has accomplished something that many people dream about; of becoming a pro MMA fighter. Its feels good, and has its perks.
LB: A postal connection of mine contacted me recently as he knew you and I are friends, looking to contact you in order to broker a fight for the KOTC. Can you comment on that?
KWJ: I have heard these rumors, and have been contacted by a several people already. I was unaware of the extent of my popularity. I am ready to negotiate. The exitement is building and I will be ready.
LB: I'm going to list a few names of several MMA Fighters. Please give your thoughts on how you would approach a fight them...Dan "The Wolfman" Theodore
KWJ: Struggling to make it; Seems like a nice guy, a little strange, but a while back I though he wanted to fight me & I accepted. Turned out it was someone impersonating him. I know he has done some wing chun, but not at my level. I would out-chain punch him easily haha!!!!
LB: Phil Baroni
KWJ: Baloni? hahaha! Sheesh. I saw his video compilation. why was he crawling on the floor with his ass hanging out? I thought I would have to choke him out, but after seeing that he might enjoy that, so maybe I'd have to beat him by keeping as little body contact as possible. Possibly a leglock. Yeah. jab. cross, level change, leglock. End of fight.
LB: "The Predator"
KWJ: Strange, strange fellow. Arizona legend I believe. He has made a few disparaging remaks to me in the past, then later said some nice things. I invited him down to train, and he said he would, but never heard from him again. I would approach such a fight fully clothed in spandex...you know...to alleviate the risk of Ringwork infection. Then I'd probably knock him out with some BJJ strikes after I place him in a BJJ triangle.
LB: Yoshida
KWJ: Too easy. He is strong as an ox and has quite a chin, so I wouldnt try what Vanderlei did. I would simply appear in the ring in my BJJ Kimono and make sure to have a Royce patch somewhere on my gi. As soon as he sees this he would be stunned and I'd simply use my BJJ skills - no strength - to out manouver his Judo attempts till I acheive dominant position...much like Royce did.
LB: I remember going back a few years when we used to butt heads on the forums that you were a big proponent of cross training. As a BJJ purple belt, would you now agree that BJJ is superior and cross training is for kids?
KWJ: Well obviously there is no doubt BJJ is the most superior grappling art of all. In the old days my uninitiated eyes looked at things in terms of 'styles', hence my advocacy of cross-training and now, that isn't necessarily the case. A 'fight' is simply what you make it. With BJJ, especially the Vale Tudo aspect, you can strike if you wish, in order to set up your BJJ takedowns. Those strikes could be looked at as BJJ strikes. Heh heh. So what if you wind up knocking him out with a high kick or jab-cros?? You started with a BJJ mindset, and the kigh kick KO was incidental....it was still a BJJ strike right? Look at Vitor. All his K.O's are BJJ KO's because he was setting them up for his devastating BJJ. His opponents simply wilted under the pressure of his BJJ punches. He never got a chance to unleash the rest of the BJJ arsenal. Luckily for them. :-)
LB: Also back then you were very big on Wing Chun Kung Fu. How would you approach a match with Manny Reyes (KOTC champ) under K1 rules (ie. pure striking).
KWJ: I would simply devastate Manny under K-1 rules. You see I too was a point karate king, even before I took wing chun seriously. So everything manny can do I can do better. Difference was I never won a 'world tag karate championship' because I kept getting diqualified for "hitting too hard". lol. So my power would overwhelm him.
LB: Being on the net for such a long time you would have witnessed a lot of fads come and go. What are your thoughts on "No-Gi BJJ"?
KWJ: Just a fad. A fad to feed those who are insecure about their grappling skills. Look; I see it this way...true BJJ (like any art should), encompasses ALL aspects of fighting. Gi, no gi, takedowns, strikes, no strikes. Those who focus on one, are limiting themselves. Although...I can see the money making opportunities; to focus on one incomplete aspect of BJJ appeals to those who lack technique and just want to 'rassle' you. A TRUE BJJ master such as myself can easily transiition between gi, no-gi, street and MMA competition no sweat. Sometimes even on the same weekend
LB: Now with several MMA fights under your belt, you would know inimately what goes through the mind of a fighter when he is in the cage. What do you think Yoshida was saying to himself when BJJ Black Belt Royce Gracie was
smashing him in the face over and over?
KWJ: LOL!!! I think Yoshida was saying to himself "Man. I wish this re-match was under the same incomplete rules as the first match - ouch!!". lol
LB: As a moderator of one of the biggest MMA forums on the internet, you would keep a close eye on troll activity. Where do you think all the anti BJJ trolls disappeared to after BJJ Black Belt Royce Gracie destroyed Yoshida?
KWJ: Studying troll activity certainly occupies a special place in my heart. lol. Certainly there were and are many trolls who expected Yoshida to defeat Royce, but I think once they were proved wrong, and since the bad trolls travel in groups, they simply found a new target to go after, such as Wes Sims or Phil Baroni.
LB: You are developing something of an "underground" following on the internet. What do you think of all the attention?
KWJ: I never always understood it, but I think I do now. It is not often being a reluctant hero transforms one into acceptance of the role bestowed upon one. When I was training deep in the mountains of Big Bear for my last fight, without access to the phone or the internet, i would still get mysterious messages informing me that the fans are rooting for me on the internet. This inspired me to run faster, train harder, sleep better.
LB: Any message you would like to send to your fans?
KWJ: I would like to say thank you for your unwavering support. All of them. I did it for them. You complete me.
LB: Dhira, thanks again for your time, best of luck with everything, and I look forward to hanging out and training with you sometime in the future!
KWJ: Thank you my friend. It would be my pleasure to trade BJJ techniques with you.

VANDERLEI SPEAKS

Vanderlei Silva
Brazilian magazine
Tatame recently interviewed PRIDE champion
Vanderlei Silva. Here's what Vanderlei had to say (interview by
Gleidson Venga):
Tatame: Is your knee injury fully recovered?
Vanderlei: It already is. I'm working out specifically on strengthening my ligaments, and we've been hitting each other at the academy.
Tatame: So you will face Yuki Kondo in August?
Vanderlei: Yes. I've already started preparing, and when I get back to Curitiba I will continue to get ready. I will have more time for this fight's preparation, so I intend to be in way better shape physically and technically.
Tatame: Your next opponent after Kondo is supposed to be the winner of the match between Quinton Jackson and Ricardo Arona. Do you think there's a favorite?
Vanderlei: It's a stalemate, either of them can win. I think Jackson is a very strong guy who fights well standing. He defeated Bustamente, who is Arona's coach, so I think it may be more complicated for Arona.
Tatame: Do you have any preferences for this match?
Vanderlei: No, but I want to fight against Jackson again, because the last time we fought I feel I didn't get off completely. I want to get him in full! I would like to get Arona too because he speaks way too much. Let's see if he will be so courageous at the time he is supposed to be.
Tatame: How about the defeats of your teammates Ninja and Macaco?
Vanderlei: It's not normal for Chute Boxe to lose in PRIDE. Those defeats have an explanation, both of them. Macaco went until the end, and he fought well. It's been two months since he joined us, and he fought standing too. For him, the fact that he's training with us now is new and he's still adapting. Our team has been rebuilt again, with great acquisitions, and now we have a very mixed training. When we get back to full power, we will see everybody winning.
Tatame: Nino Schembri will soon face Sakuraba. What can we expect from this match?
Vanderlei: We've been training Nino to show a new approach. In order to make him better than Sakuraba, he must push the fight standing and then bring it to the ground, which is his specialty. He's training real hard, and he's taken to our team very well. He's teaching us Jiu-Jitsu, so I think he will do much better than he did last time.
Tatame: Do you have any guesses for the PRIDE Heavyweight GP?
Vanderlei: I think it will be between Fedor and Minotauro. I think if everything works out well and they arrive in the finals, it would be like my fight with Jackson. It will certainly be a historic fight.
Tatame: Do you think Randleman can cause a surprise upset against Fedor?
Vanderlei: No, I don't. I don't think he will get passed Fedor unless he lands that real heavy punch he has. But Fedor won't be that silly. Cro Cop wasn't either, but fights can be strange sometimes. It may be Ogawa, who knows. But the probabilities are higher for Fedor and Minotauro. Minotauro will do a rematch with Herring, and that first fight between them was very hard. Herring has improved a lot since then, so it will be a real tough fight. I think this PRIDE GP will be real hard. That Japanese fighter (Yokoi) presented some difficulties to Minotauro. I mean it was not a big deal, but he wasn't that easy as well.
Tatame: Ok, let's get to the point, who will be the heavyweight fighter for Chute Boxe?
Vanderlei: Napao is already there training with us. I have trained standup with him already. He went to our academy and he's training. I'm teaching him a couple of things and it seems to be working since he has changed his whole game. He has good boxing skills, and he's learning how to kick. He's big and lean, around 100 kg (220 pounds), but we will now bring him up to 110 kg (242 pounds) and make him stronger. Let the guys get ready for him, he will be a new fighter. If he gets there and stays there, he has everything to become our big star. He's a nice guy and very technical.
Tatame: Can you tell us what is the importance of Jiu-Jitsu in your training, since your ground game has been spoken about a lot these days?
Vanderlei: Jiu-Jitsu is as important as Muay Thai is. If I were to have just have Jiu-Jitsu and my opponent is not that good on the gro8nd, he will get fucked up! We've really been training a lot of Jiu-Jitsu here. Actually, I don't use my Jiu-Jitsu to just submit my opponent. I use it to achieve good position in order to attack and submit by tapping out. I'm now weighing 98 kg (216 pounds), and I will start a work to go up to 103 kg (227 pounds). I will then drop down to 93 kg (205 pounds) in order to fight in August. I've been doing one of the best preparations I've ever done.
Tatame: So you will be sharper than ever?
Vanderlei: I will get there completely ready. Let them get ready for me..."Hands of Stone".
Tatame: What can we expect from Vanderlei Silva these next few months?
Vanderlei: Since I did just one fight in the first half of the year, if I don't get injured, I intend to do three matches in the second half of the year, so long as I don't get injured. I am already scheduled to fight on the December 31st PRIDE show. I already know who my opponent is, but it will be a surprise. They will be battling for ratings in Japan, but they will put a very well known guy to fight against me.

Ken Shamrock
Ken Shamrock made an appearance on yesterday night's edition of Fox Sport's
'Best Damn Sports Show Period' to promote his upcoming fight against
Kimo Leopoldo in
UFC 48 on

When asked about some disparaging comments
'Tank' Abbott had made about him, Shamrock replied by stating how Tank had turned down the UFC 49 fight againt him.
Overall, Shamrock represented himself very well in front of the camera as usual, and did a very good job of promoting his upcoming fight and the
