FINKEL: 'TYSON TORE ACL IN FIRST ROUND'

Mike Tyson after being knocked out by Williams.
Mike Tyson tore a ligament in his left knee in the first round of his upset knockout loss to
Danny Williams on Friday night, announced his manager
Shelly Finkel.
Finkel said an
MRI showed a complex tear of the
lateral meniscus, and that Tyson couldn't even walk on the leg last night.
Tyson was dominating the first round, rocking Williams with shots to the head, but late in the round
motioned toward his knee and grimaced. Finkel said Tyson refused to make an excuse and wanted to continue fighting.
Tyson ended up getting
knocked out with a series of punches by Williams in the
fourth round. Tyson appeared as if he could get up and continue, but made little attempt to get up.
"In retrospect I wish he had said something and said he couldn't continue," Finkel said.
After the fight, Tyson's trainer,
Freddie Roach credited Williams with fighting a good fight, but said Tyson was hampered by the injury.

TYSON LOSES BY KO

Mike Tyson
By
Scoop McTroll at ringside:
Unheralded English heavyweight
Danny Williams shocked the world Friday night when he knocked out
Mike Tyson at Freedom Hall in
Louisville, Kentucky.
Round one: Williams, a
9-1 underdog, came out looking to trade punches with Tyson. The strategy looked to be a big mistake when Tyson rocked Williams several times with left hooks and right uppercuts.
Round two: The second round saw both fighters land some
good shots.
Round three: Williams was deducted two points by referee
Dennis Alfred for hitting on the break and a low blow, but Tyson was already cut over his right eye from an unintentional headbutt. The
out-of-shape Tyson also seemed to be tiring greatly at this point.
Round four: Williams took control of the fight in this round, finally dropping Tyson with a vicious barrage of strikes. A dazed Tyson was unable to beat the count. The official time of the
KO was
2:51.
Post-fight notes: Tyson left the ring right after the fight without commenting to anyone.
Tyson advisor
Shelly Finkel stated to the media that Tyson badly twisted his left knee in the first round, not allowing him to get the leverage he wanted on his punches.
Trainer
Freddie Roach said that the 38-year old Tyson got worn out by the size of the 265-pound Williams, and that Tyson's future is unclear at this point.
Williams said he'd like to get a
title shot, but if that doesn't materialize he'd be more then happy to give Tyson a
rematch.

VANDERLEI SPEAKS

Vanderlei Silva (top) KO's Quinton Jackson (bottom) in their first fight.
PRIDE champion
Vanderlei Silva made the following comments to Brazilian magazine
'Tatame' regarding the
PRIDE GP and his future opponents (by
Gleidson Venga):
Vanderlei on the PRIDE Heavyweight GP Finals: "I think the title match will be between Minotauro and Fedor. Since Fedor fought well last time, he has become one of the favorites, but 'Minotauro' is now better then before. He didn't accept that defeat to Fedor, so I think he will be coming in more prepared this time. Being Brazilian, I want 'Minotauro' to win, and I think he has a really good chance to beat Fedor. I bet on 'Minotauro' to be the Champion of the GP".
Vanderlei on his next two opponents (Yuki Kondo and Quinton Jackson): "PRIDE pays us very well, but you must fight against anyone there. So there are only tough fights for me this year. I'd say the level will continue to increase this year. Kondo will be the lightest fighter. After him there's Jackson, who's a very good and tough athlete. I will have a rematch against him now since both of us came into our last fight having already fought a tough fight that same night. I also really want to fight with him again.
Vanderlei on his heavyweight opponent scheduled for the end of the year ('Minotauro', Fedor, or 'Cro Cop'): "I think December 31st will be my biggest test, since those three fighters for me are real tough athletes. Two of them are champions in their weight categories. I want to be tested. I don't run away, and this year I will face my biggest challenges."

ATKINS INSIDER: PENN, THE UFC, AND OTHER NEWS
By Todd Atkins

B.J. Penn
As you know,
B.J. Penn is suing the
UFC. UFC president
ana White and owner
Lorenzo Ferttita are very confident that the language in the contract that B.J. signed will support the UFC's position.
Frank Trigg is very unhappy that he isn't fighting for the title and has not been contacted by UFC about a contract renewal. Dana White thinks Frank Trigg will be back in the UFC, but he was not given consideration for a rematch with
Matt Hughes for several reasons:
1. The first fight was
not close. (
Editor's note: First fight between Penn and Hughes was not close either, but Dana White still wanted to give Hughes a rematch.)
2. UFC feels that Frank Trigg does not carry himself like a champion.
Zuffa does not mind loud, confident, trash talking fighters. They do feel however that Frank Trigg is over the top, especially when he is being
critical of the UFC, and talking about his porn sponsorships, etc., even when he has been fined in the past for doing so.
3. Frank Trigg also acts like he is calling the shots as far as
contract negotiations are concerned.
The UFC is signing fighters that will
sign their standard contracts without a bunch of resistance. They are at a point where they are calling all the shots and there really is not much negotiation anymore unless you are a
Ken Shamrock or
Randy Couture.
Zuffa has their business model at a point where they believe they can make money. If you are a fighter that is willing to
work within their terms, great. If not, Zuffa will have no problems with cutting you loose.
Also, Dana White is getting tired of fighters
threatening to go to K-1,
PRIDE, or other shows. Zuffa now feels that it does not have to try and fight to keep certain fighters. As strange as it seems, Dana White and Lorenzo Ferttita have so many contacts that they know who is and who is not being looked at by the other promotions.
Apparently one of the new angles that fighters have now been taking is to say that they have an
offer from someone when they really have no other offers on the table.
I have also heard (as
Tape Lord has already reported) that
K-1 is talking to
'Tank' Abbott again about fighting for them.
I will report some more new stuff later.

FORMER WCW/WWF STAR TO JOIN K-1

Sean O'Haire
The following is from the SoCal insider called
'xshanex':
"I was told today that Former
WCW and
WWF Wrestler
Sean O'Haire will be going to
K-1 supposedly as an
MMA fighter as well as a
Pro-wrestler.
I am not sure how soon he will be making his debut, but O'Haire is a known
Martial Artist and had a reputation as a
'tough guy', though there was once a rumor that a fan
KO'ed him at a show, but I never heard it as a confirmed truth.
