UFC TO HOLD HEAVYWEIGHT TOURNAMENT

Will Tank Abbott return for the Tournament?

Coffee Guy, our man on the inside has told us that the UFC intend to hold a Heavyweight Tournament that will determine an Interim Heavyweight Champion. The winner will defend the title until Frank Mir returns to the scene, upon which a fight between the two champions will take place. The tournament will be held over at least two seperate UFC events. It is not known how many competitors the tournament will include, the idea itself is all thats really been 90% confirmed at this stage. In our opinion ZUFFA really have an opportunity to turn this into something really big. Hopefully it wont be some low key four man tourney, hopefully it will at least be an eight man tournament and it will have some decent talent amongst the competitors.

COFFEE GUY REPORT: MIR OUT OF UFC 51

Andre Arlovski was set to fight Frank Mir at UFC51

Further to our breaking report of Frank Mir's motorcycle accident, Coffee Guy has now confirmed that Mir has a broken femur and will be out of action for several months. Once again we wish him a full and speedy recovery.

This has left the main event for UFC51 in tatters. It is now hoped that Tim Sylvia will be fit to fight Arlovski in a non title fight but Sylvia is currently still healing his own broken bones and is not a definite at this stage. Former champion Ricco Rodriguez's name has also been tossed around as a possibile opponent for Arlovski. They are also looking at bringing in another big name Heavyweight to liven up the division but finding a suitable fighter thats not already under contract appears difficult.

MINOTAURO TO K-1 ?

Minotauro not happy about Fedor retaining the title.

The Japanese media have been reporting that Nogueira Rodrigo Minotauro may be leaving Pride and joining the K-1 organisation. Reports are saying that Minotauro is displeased that Pride did not award victory to him in his fight against Fedor at the Heavyweight Grand Prix which was stopped due to a major cut received by Fedor. This along with poor negotiations with DSE over conditions has lead to Minotauro looking towards K1, the reports suggest.

Officially BTT are refusing to confirm any such rumors. They say they are still negotiating a rematch with Fedor which will be billed by Pride as a Super-Fight.

SIMS BACK ON COURSE FOR UFC TITLE

"I want Mir" says Sims.

Wes Sims, the talented heavyweight who has thrilled fans with his exploits in the cage, chalked up yet another victory at Extreme Challenge this week. After a freak loss at Apex:Genesis only last week, Sims bounced back to defeat a tough 350lb monster from the midwest. Big Wes dominated the standup and the ground fighting and looked to be a man on a mission, a man with a title belt in his sights. Sims was heard later to have said he wants another shot at UFC Heavyweight champion Frank Mir. Sims was beating Mir in their first fight but was disqualified for using Pride rules. With impressive performances like his most recent one, it shouldnt be long before his wish to fight in the UFC again comes true.

VANDERLEI SILVA LAUNCHES HIS OWN MOTORCYCLE

Vanderlei Silva poses with his mechanical facsimile

Our friends at ADCC have reported the following. Words and photos by Marcelo Alonso.

One month after getting a sponsorship from Yokohama, the famous japanese tire company, Pride Middleweight champion Vanderlei Silva was invited by a Honda branch in Curitiba (Cabral Motos), to put his 'WAND' logo on a limited series of cycles: Twister (CBX 250), Titan (CG 150) e Biz (C 100).

Last month, one day before leaving for Japan to face Yuki Kondo, Wanderlei filmed the advertisement that has being broadcast on Parana tv since last Saturday.

'Our idea is show that 'Wand' motorcycless have the same qualities of the champion - strength, endurance and power' stated Victor Spindola, the creator of the advertising campaign. Besides the logo on the tank, the limited series of bikes will have a special helmet, copying the famous tattoo that Silva has on his head.

'I´m very proud that important companies like Honda and Yokohama are are starting to believe in our sport. I hope this is a first step for many other fighters' a proud Wanderlei Silva told us after his return from Tokyo, where he ran over Yuki Kondo in the last Pride Final Conflict, held on August 15th.

REAL PRO WRESTLING SECURES TV DEAL

Rulon Gardner seen in his Gold Medal winning match against Alexander Karelin at the Sydney 2000 Olympics.

LOS ANGELES, September 10: PAX TV has teamed with Real Pro Wrestling to launch an Olympic-style wrestling series on the network in February 2005.

The 15-week series will premiere February 13, a week following the Super Bowl, with wrestlers competing for the championship and $250,000 in prizes.

"Finally, the world's best wrestlers can earn a living at what they do best," said Tony Willis, the co-founder and CEO of Real Pro Wrestling. "Wrestling fans deserve to see their heroes compete against the best in the world."

Each one-hour episode will contain segments that can be sponsored by advertisers, such as Background Stories, Tale of the Tape, Tech Moment, Move of the Day, Official Drink, Official Apparel and Official Footwear.

Olympic Greco-Roman wrestling champion Rulon Gardner reportedly gave his verbal committment to competing in this event after he won Bronze at the Athens Olympics.

With the sort of prize money being offered, there is some speculation that former wrestlers turned MMA fighters such as Matt Lindland, Dan Henderson, Kevin Randleman, Mark Coleman or Randy Couture might make a return to the sport at the new pro level.

We also have to wonder how the hell a show like this can be sold to Pax TV when the UFC appear to have fumbled every attempt thus far to get a regular UFC telecast on one of the networks. And please, dont mention the Spike TV thing, im referring to a TV show that features UFC fights, not some MMA version of 'The Contender'. Maybe ZUFFA could hire the Real Pro Wrestling guy to get a TV deal for them as well. For the past four years Dana White of the UFC has been quoted as saying a TV deal is just around the corner and yet a show with far narrower potential audience appeal than the UFC has just secured a 15 week deal.
